Social Media Character Limits: Every Platform in One Place
Social media character limits differ on every platform, and each stops a post for different reasons. This page lists the limits that matter for Instagram, YouTube, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn and X, and says where a limit is a fold rather than a refusal.
Social media character limits at a glance
Instagram allows 2,200 characters in a caption and 150 in a bio. YouTube allows 100 in a title and 5,000 in a description. Threads allows 500 per post, X allows 280, and LinkedIn allows 3,000 in a post. Facebook allows far more, and folds long posts behind See more.
Facebook page bio character limit
A Facebook Page's short intro, its bio, allows about 100 characters, so write it to be read in one glance. Facebook can change it, so check the Page settings. Posts themselves allow far more, and Facebook folds long ones behind See more.
A caption holds up to 2,200 characters and up to 5 hashtags (Instagram cut the limit from 30 in December 2025). The feed shows only about the first 125 characters before “more”, so that is the part that counts.
A carousel takes up to 10 photos or videos. A Reel is 3 seconds to 15 minutes, up to 300 MB, 23 to 60 frames per second, with 9:16 recommended.
Through the API the account must be a professional one, Business or Creator.
YouTube
A title holds up to 100 characters and a description up to 5,000. A file can be up to 256 GB or 12 hours; an account that has not been verified is held to 15 minutes.
A Short is a vertical or square video of up to three minutes.
A post holds up to 3,000 characters. The feed cuts it behind “see more” after about 210 characters or three lines, whichever comes first.
A post takes up to 9 photos or one video. A video is MP4, from 3 seconds to 30 minutes and 75 KB to 500 MB.
Threads
A post holds 500 characters, and emoji are counted by their size in UTF-8 bytes, so a few emoji use up more room than they look like. At most five links are allowed in a post.
A video can be up to 5 minutes and 1 GB; a photo is JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB. Only the first hashtag in a post works as a topic tag.
Facebook Pages
A Reel is vertical, 9:16, at least 540 × 960 pixels, and between 3 and 90 seconds. Anything outside that goes out as an ordinary Page video.
Meta’s API reference does not state a character limit for a Page post, so it is not listed here.
X
A post holds 280 characters. Every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, and most emoji count double.
A longer text has to become a thread of separate posts.
Where Dripost helps
Dripost checks a post against these limits before it is scheduled and shows the platform’s own reason if a platform still refuses it. Each platform’s limits are applied to its own version of the post, so one caption can go out right on all six.
Facebook character limit for Page posts
Facebook Page posts can be very long. The number that matters in practice isn’t the limit, it’s how much people see before See more.
The ceiling: 63,206 characters. Dripost uses 63,206 characters as the Page post ceiling, the limit Facebook has enforced for years. Meta’s Graph API reference doesn’t restate a number, so this check exists mainly to stop a runaway paste before Facebook does.
How Dripost counts. For Facebook, each character counts once: an emoji is one, and a link counts as the characters you typed. The count sits under the Facebook tab as you write.
The fold matters more. Facebook folds long posts behind See more, and where it folds depends on where the post is shown. Meta doesn’t publish one number for it, so Dripost doesn’t draw a fold line for Facebook rather than guess one.
