Threads Character Limit: 500 Characters and How It Counts
The character limit on Threads is 500 characters per post. Here is how Threads counts emoji and links, what happens to longer text, and how Dripost checks it before you schedule.
What the Threads character limit means
A Threads post holds up to 500 characters, and emoji count by their size in bytes, so a few emoji take more room than letters. A longer text does not fail in Dripost: it posts as a chain of replies.
1. The limit: 500 per post
Meta’s Threads developer documentation limits a text post to 500 characters. Dripost’s Threads tab counts toward that as you write.
Threads in Dripost is in live testing now: built and posting for real, open to tester accounts, and open to everyone once that test is done.
2. Emoji count by their size
The same documentation says emoji count as the number of UTF-8 bytes they take, so a single emoji can count as up to four characters, and a flag or a skin-tone emoji more. Dripost counts them the same way, which is why a post can hit the limit sooner than it looks.
3. Longer text becomes a chain
Past 500 characters nothing is refused: Dripost posts the text as a chain, the first post followed by replies, split at paragraphs, then sentences, then words, never inside a word or a link. The Threads tab says how many posts it will be.
4. Up to ten posts in a chain
Dripost chains up to 10 posts. A text that would need more is stopped before scheduling, with the number of posts it would take.
5. Links and the first hashtag
Each post can carry up to 5 links. Only the first hashtag in a post becomes its topic; later hashtags still count as characters but stay plain text.
6. Compare with X
On X the same text gets 280 characters, with links at 23 and most emoji at two, and Dripost sends one post there, not a chain. In one composer each tab keeps its own version.
Writing to the limit
Treat 500 as a paragraph, not a target. A single strong post often reads better than a chain; when you need a chain, make each post a complete step so a reader can stop anywhere.
