Instagram Bio Character Limit: Bio, Caption and Hashtag Limits
The character limit for an Instagram bio is 150 characters. A caption can run to 2,200, only about 125 show before “more”, and 5 hashtags is the ceiling. Here is how each limit works and how to write inside them.
Instagram bio character limit: official number
The official limit for a bio on Instagram is 150 characters, as Instagram's help page on adding a bio says. That was true on 4 October 2026, the date of this guide. Instagram can change it, so check the help page if you are reading later.
The 150 count includes spaces, emoji and line breaks. Your name field and username have their own limits, and a username cannot hold styled letters, though the name and bio can.
Instagram caption character limit: 2,200
Instagram refuses a caption over 2,200 characters. Dripost counts as it goes: an emoji counts as one character, and a link counts as the letters you typed. Over the limit, the post is stopped before you can schedule it, with how far over it is.
2. The fold: about 125 characters
In the feed Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters, or two lines, then “… more”. A line break early on folds it sooner. Dripost’s preview draws that line, so you see what people read without tapping.
Hashtag limit on Instagram: 5 at most
Since 18 December 2025 Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a post or Reel; it used to be 30. Dripost stops a post over 5 before it is scheduled rather than letting it fail at posting time.
4. Move hashtags to the first comment
Hashtags in the caption eat into the part above the fold. Dripost’s Instagram tab has a First Comment field that posts right after the post goes live, so the caption stays clean and the tags stay on the post.
5. Write the opening line last
Draft the whole caption, then rewrite the first 125 characters so they make sense alone. The free Instagram character counter on Dripost counts the same way, in your browser, with no account.
6. Keep line breaks
Short paragraphs read better on a phone. Line breaks typed in Dripost reach Instagram as typed; the free Instagram line break generator helps if you write elsewhere.

Questions
What is the Instagram character limit for captions?
2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and hashtags.
Do hashtags in the first comment count toward 30?
Instagram’s limit is on the caption. Keep the first comment to a handful that describe the post; that is what matters for being found.
Why was my first comment not posted?
Posting a comment needs Instagram’s comment permission on the connection. Without it the post still goes live, and Dripost tells you the comment wasn’t sent so you can add it on Instagram yourself.
Does the limit include spaces and line breaks?
Yes. Every character you type counts, spaces and line breaks included.
