How to add a link to a YouTube video description
Here is how to add a link to YouTube videos in Dripost, in the description where viewers can click it. The description and the first comment are where a video sends people onward: to a shop, a newsletter, a playlist or the next video.
Who this is for
Creators with affiliate links, merch or a course, channels linking to a longer video from a Short, and anyone who writes the same set of links under every upload.
1. Put links in the description
Write the description on the YouTube tab and paste each full address, https included. The description goes up to 5,000 characters, and a link counts as the characters you typed.
2. Keep the key link near the top
Lead with the one link that matters most and say in a few words what it is. A wall of addresses with no explanation is easy to scroll past.
3. Use the first comment too
The First Comment field on the YouTube tab posts from your channel right after the upload. It suits a link you want in the conversation, or a question with the link after it.
4. Save your standard links
The composer’s Templates pane keeps text you reuse, such as your usual block of social links and gear list, saved on that device. Insert it into each new description instead of pasting from a notes app.
5. Share the finished video’s link
Once YouTube has processed the video, Dripost shows its link on the post. Copy it into a post for X, LinkedIn or Threads to send people to the video.
6. Watch the hashtag count
Hashtags in the description count as characters too, and YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video with more than 15. Dripost warns you before scheduling.
Link from other platforms back to YouTube
Once the video is live, a post on LinkedIn, X or Threads with its link sends people to watch. On X every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, so the full YouTube address costs the same as a short one.
Plan availability
Links in descriptions and first comments work on every plan.
Questions
Can I add links to a Short?
The description and first comment take links for any upload. How YouTube displays them on a Short is up to YouTube.
Does Dripost shorten or track links?
No. Links go out exactly as written.
What if the first comment fails?
The video still posts, and Dripost tells you so you can add the comment on the video.
