Twitter Character Limit: The X Post Limit and How It Counts

What is the character limit on X?

The character limit on X is 280 for a normal post. Every link counts as 23 characters, and most emoji and many non-Latin letters count double. A paid X Premium account can write longer posts, but Dripost checks against 280.

X post character limit and the Twitter bio character limit

The X post character limit of 280 applies to posts and replies. The Twitter bio character limit on X is 160 characters. Your display name has its own shorter limit.

1. The limit: 280

Dripost sends one post of up to 280 characters to X, counted with X’s own weighting. A longer post is stopped before scheduling with how far over it is.

2. Links: always 23

X rewrites every link, so each costs 23 characters however long the address really is. Two links take 46 before you’ve written a word.

3. Emoji: usually two

Most emoji count as two characters on X. A row of five emoji is ten characters, not five, which is often the reason a post that looks short is over.

4. Hindi and other Indian scripts

Devanagari sits in the range X counts as one per character, the same as English letters, so a Hindi post gets the same room as an English one. The X tab in Dripost counts it that way.

5. Over the limit? Three choices

Trim to 280 cuts exactly where X would. Or rewrite the X tab on its own while LinkedIn and Threads keep the full text. Or post a thread by hand: the free X thread formatter splits a long text into numbered posts that each fit, since Dripost doesn’t post threads to X.

6. Check anywhere

The free X character counter on Dripost counts the same way in your browser, without an account, for text you’re writing somewhere else.

Where Threads differs

Threads allows 500 characters a post but counts an emoji by its size in bytes, so one emoji can cost up to four there. The same post can fit Threads with room to spare and still be over on X, or the other way round with emoji-heavy text.
