ChatGPT connectors: add a custom MCP server in developer mode
ChatGPT connects to outside tools through connectors, and a custom connector can be any remote MCP server you add yourself in developer mode. Here is how ChatGPT connectors work, with Dripost’s MCP server as an example.
What ChatGPT connectors are
OpenAI describes remote MCP servers as a way to reach new data sources and capabilities over the Internet, so ChatGPT can use external applications.
These servers aren’t built or verified by OpenAI. Their own terms apply.
1. Developer mode
Open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. OpenAI lists it for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web.
2. Create the app
Use the plus button to add a developer-mode app and enter the server’s details. The server must use SSE or streaming HTTP; OpenAI lists OAuth, no authentication and mixed authentication as options.
Dripost’s address is mcp.dripost.com/mcp, and Dripost apps can connect with OAuth. Once added, it appears as a developer-mode tool in conversations.
3. Use it, and watch the confirmations
OpenAI says ChatGPT currently requires manual confirmation in any conversation before write actions, and asks you to review the input going to a write action. Treat that prompt as the checkpoint it is.
Dripost has its own checkpoints behind it: drafts-only by default, a “post” permission you tick, a 10 minute hold on anything an AI wrote or changed, and your approval on dripost.com for immediate publishing.
Trusting a server
OpenAI’s advice is not to connect to a custom server unless you know and trust the application, and to prefer official servers hosted by the service providers themselves. Dripost’s server is hosted by Dripost.
ChatGPT Facebook posting
ChatGPT can draft Facebook Page posts and hand them to Dripost, which does the posting. It takes a one-time connector setup, and publishing stays behind your permission.
Check you’re eligible. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web, so start there: the mobile app isn’t named.
Add the connector. Developer mode on, a new app, server address mcp.dripost.com/mcp, and sign in with your Dripost account through OAuth. Afterwards the app appears among the tools in a conversation.
Link your Page. Dripost posts to Facebook Pages. Connect yours in Channels and ask ChatGPT, “Which of my channels are working?” to confirm it can see the Page.
ChatGPT Instagram posting
ChatGPT can’t log in to Instagram for you, but it can use a connector that can. Add Dripost’s MCP server in ChatGPT’s developer mode and ChatGPT can draft Instagram posts, hand them to Dripost and schedule them once you allow it.
Switch on developer mode. OpenAI’s documentation says to open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. It lists the feature for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web.
Add Dripost as the connector. Create a new developer-mode app with the plus button and enter mcp.dripost.com/mcp. OpenAI says the server must use SSE or streaming HTTP, and that OAuth is among the supported sign-in options. Dripost apps can connect with OAuth.
Ask for an Instagram post. Try: “Add the Reel at this link to my library and write a caption for Instagram, friendly, with two hashtags.” ChatGPT uses the import-media and create-post tools and returns the draft.
ChatGPT and X
ChatGPT can write a post for X, and with Dripost connected it can also put that post in your queue. Dripost sends text-only posts to X, and the approval rules mean nothing leaves on ChatGPT’s word alone.
Connect Dripost to ChatGPT. Enable Developer mode (Settings, Security and login), add a new app and enter mcp.dripost.com/mcp. OpenAI says to connect only to servers you know and trust, and that custom servers aren’t verified by OpenAI.
Link X in Dripost. Add X under Channels. ChatGPT can then see it when it asks Dripost for the workspace and its connected channels.
Write the post together. “Give me four short posts about the update, no hashtags, and save the best as a draft for X.” Dripost keeps the draft; X posts here are text only, so leave images out.
ChatGPT and YouTube
ChatGPT doesn’t upload to YouTube by itself. With Dripost’s MCP server added as a connector, it can import a video from a link, write the title and description and schedule the upload, within limits you set.
Set up the connector. Turn on Developer mode in Settings, Security and login, create an app and use mcp.dripost.com/mcp as its server. OpenAI’s documentation describes developer mode as powerful but dangerous, so go through the prompts rather than skipping them.
Bring the video in by link. Dripost’s import tool needs a direct link to the file and stores it in your library exactly as it is. Tell ChatGPT: “Import this link, then show me the library item.”
Create the YouTube draft. Ask for the title, description and a Thursday evening slot. ChatGPT calls create-post and you open the draft in Dripost to check the video, title and time.
