Write a simple Instagram bio in four steps

Start with what you post, in words a stranger would use. “Home cook, Pune” beats a clever line that needs explaining.

Add who it is for or what you are known for, then one line of personality, and finish with what to do next, such as a link or a day you post. Instagram holds up to 150 characters, so a line each fits.

Read it out loud. If it sounds like you on a good day, keep it. If it sounds like a slogan, cut a word.

Instagram bio ideas by type of account

A creator can lead with the topic and the schedule: “Budget travel for students. New video every Friday.” A small shop can lead with what it sells and where it ships. A personal profile can lead with one interest and one joke.

Your name field is searchable, so put the plain words people would search for there, and use the bio for the warmer line.

Edit bio on Instagram: the app and the web

In the app, open your profile and tap Edit profile, then Bio. Type the new text and save. On a computer, open Instagram in a browser, choose your profile, then Edit profile, and change the bio there.

What to leave out

Skip claims you cannot back up, a row of emoji instead of words, and anything that will be out of date next month. Keep numbers like a follower count out of it.

Your link has its own place in Edit profile, so the bio does not need to spell out a long address.
