How to Repost on Instagram: Feed Posts, Reels and Stories
Instagram has a real repost button now. This guide shows how to repost on Instagram: it is not the only way to share someone’s post, and each way shows up in a different place.
How to repost on Instagram with the repost button
Since August 2025, public feed posts and Reels have a repost icon, two arrows in a loop, below the post. Tap it and the post is reposted straight away.
To add a line of your own, tap the small bubble by your profile picture before it posts and type in “Add a thought”.
Your repost goes into your followers’ feeds and onto a Reposts tab on your profile. It doesn’t land on your main grid, so it won’t upset a layout you designed.
The button only appears when the person who posted it allows reposts. If you can’t see it, they have turned reposts off.
Undo a repost
Tap the repost icon again on the same post, or open the Reposts tab on your profile and remove it there. The original post isn’t affected.
Share a post to your Story
Tap the paper-plane share icon under a post or Reel and choose Add to story. The post appears as a card your viewers can tap to open the original.
Use it when you want to comment on something for a day rather than keep it on your profile: Stories disappear after 24 hours unless you save them to a highlight.
Repost a Story you’re tagged in
When someone mentions you in their Story you get a message. Open it and tap Add to your story. You can resize the card, add stickers or text, then share.
You can’t reshare a Story you weren’t tagged in. For that, ask the person to send it, or take a screenshot only with their permission.
How to repost a post on Instagram as your own photo
Some people save another account’s photo and post it again. If you do this, ask first, tag the original account in the photo and name them in the first line of the caption.
Without permission, the owner can report it and Instagram can take it down. For a business account, getting a written yes, even a reply in DMs, is worth the minute it takes.
Which one to use
Repost button: you want your followers to see it in their feed, with credit built in.
Share to Story: a quick mention that fades in a day.
Collab post: you made it together. Invite the other account as a collaborator before posting and it appears on both profiles.
