How to Change Your Twitter Handle (X Username), Step by Step
You can change your Twitter handle on X from your account settings without losing your followers or posts. This guide gives the steps, the rules a username has to follow and what to update after you switch.
How to change Twitter handle on X: the steps
Open X, go to Settings and privacy, then Your account, then Account information, and choose Username. Type the new handle. X tells you at once whether it is free, and you save the change.
Menus move, so check X's Help Center if the names differ for you.
What a handle can contain
A handle is short and may use letters, numbers and underscores, with a limited length. Spaces and most symbols are not allowed. If your first choice is taken, add a word, a number or an underscore.
What changes when you switch
Your followers, posts and profile stay. The old handle becomes free for others to take, so links that used it may stop working. Update the handle in your bio elsewhere, on your site and on cards.
Display name or handle?
The display name is the bold text above your handle and can be changed from Edit profile. The handle is the @ name that people tag. Many people change the display name more often than the handle.
