Content Brief Template: A One-Page Format to Copy

Use this template for a content brief when you want a post, a video or an article made well by a freelancer or a teammate. It fits on one screen, and each field removes a question you would be asked later.

The template for a content brief, field by field

Title: a working name. Goal: what the piece should do. Audience: who it is for. Main point: one sentence. Format and platform: for example, a 30-second vertical video for Instagram and YouTube. Tone: three words. Must include: facts, links or products. Must avoid: claims or words to leave out. Call to action: what the viewer should do next. Deadline and owner.

An example filled in

Goal: explain how to pack a festival box. Audience: customers who ordered for the first time. Main point: packing takes five minutes and keeps sweets fresh. Format: 30-second vertical video. Tone: warm, brisk, plain. Call to action: message us to order. Deadline: Friday.

Keep it to one page

A brief is a starting point, not a script. If it runs past a page, the main point is probably not clear yet. Put long background in a linked document.

Share it and schedule from it

Keep briefs in one folder with the finished piece. When the work is done, schedule it for each platform in Dripost, with a caption written for each.

    Questions

    What is a content brief?

A short page that says what a piece of content is for, who it is for and what it must include, so the maker and the owner agree before work starts.

    Who writes the brief?

The person who owns the goal, with input from whoever makes the piece.

How long should a content brief be?

One page. Link to longer background if there is any.

Any tips for writing a brief?

Start from the main point. Writing a brief is quick when that one sentence is clear; if it is not, the brief runs past a page.
