YouTube Shorts Length: How Long a Short Can Be

The length limit for YouTube Shorts is three minutes. For years the limit was 60 seconds, so older advice you find online is out of date. Here is what YouTube’s help page says today, and what counts as a Short.

The limit today for the length of YouTube Shorts

YouTube’s Shorts help page says a Short can be up to 3 minutes long. A 45-second clip, a 2-minute walkthrough and a 2:59 story all qualify on length.

The old 60-second limit is gone, so there is no need to trim a good 90-second video down to fit it.

Resolution

YouTube says Shorts can be uploaded at a maximum resolution of 1080p. A vertical 1080 × 1920 file is the natural fit for that.

Longer is not always better

Three minutes is a ceiling, not a target. A Short is watched in a feed where the next video is a swipe away, so a clip that ends when its point is made usually reads better than one stretched to the limit.

If your video runs past three minutes it is an ordinary video, not a Short. That is not a problem; it just lives in a different part of YouTube.

How Dripost handles it

In Dripost, a vertical or square video of three minutes or less goes up to YouTube as a Short. Anything longer or wider goes up as a normal video.

The title can be up to 100 characters and the description up to 5,000, and you pick private, unlisted or public. Dripost waits until YouTube has processed the video, then shows its link.
