Instagram DM Full Form and Meaning: What DM Stands For

On Instagram, the full form of DM is direct message: a private chat between you and one other person or a small group. This page explains what a DM is, how to send one on each platform and what differs.

The full form of DM on Instagram

A DM is a message that only the people in the chat can see. DM means in Instagram the same as anywhere: you send a message to a person instead of posting for all your followers. Instagram chat is the same thing under another name.

To send one, open the paper-plane icon in the app, pick a person and type. You can also tap Message on someone's profile.

How to DM on X (Twitter)

Open Messages in the X app or on the web, start a new message and pick the person. X may limit who can message you, depending on the settings the person chose, so a message can fail to reach someone who has closed their messages.

Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads

On Facebook, direct messages go through Messenger. On LinkedIn they live under Messaging, and you can usually message a connection. Threads has been adding messaging, so check the app for what your account has.

YouTube removed direct messages in 2019, so there is nothing to DM there.

DM etiquette for a business

Reply within a day when you can, say who you are in the first line and keep the first message short. Do not send the same message to many people. If a customer messages you, move to email or a call for anything private.

Questions

How to DM on Twitter?

Open Messages, choose New message, pick a person and send. If the person has closed their messages to people they do not follow, it will not go through.

Is a DM the same as a comment?

No. A comment is public, under a post. A DM is private between the people in the chat.

Can I schedule a DM?

Dripost schedules posts, not private messages. Replies to people stay in the platforms' own inboxes.

Try it on your own post.
