Instagram highlight covers: sizes and how to make one

A highlight cover is a small picture inside a circle. Here is what to know before you design one.

  • Cover size

Make the image 1080 by 1920 pixels, the same 9:16 shape as a Story. Instagram crops it to a circle, so keep the symbol or picture in the middle.

  • Keep it in the safe middle

The circle shows roughly the middle of the image, so anything near the edges is cut off. Test it by looking at the cover at thumbnail size.

  • How to make a cover

Add a picture to your Story, or use one from your camera roll. Open the highlight, tap Edit highlight, tap Edit cover, and pick the picture. A plain colour and one symbol, made in any free design app, is enough.

  • Name and cover together

The name shows only a few letters under the circle, so make the cover carry the meaning too. One clear symbol per highlight reads best in a row.

Getting more from these captions

  • Fewer, clearer highlights

Five or six highlights with clear names are easier to scan than a dozen. Delete the ones nobody opens.

  • Order matters

Instagram shows the newest highlight last, so put the one visitors need most at the front by editing the order.

  • Use a single style

One colour, one symbol style and one name length gives the row a finished look.

  • Styled text

Some people paste styled letters into a highlight name. They can look nice, but they hurt readability, so try them on one first.

Questions

How long can an Instagram highlight name be?

Names are cut off in the row after about 15 characters, so one word or two short ones works best.

What are Instagram highlights?

Highlights are collections of Stories that stay on your profile after the 24 hours are up. They sit in circles under your bio.

What are good Instagram highlight covers?

Plain colour, one symbol, one consistent style. A cover that is readable at thumbnail size beats a detailed one.

Can I download an Instagram highlight video?

Instagram does not offer a download for someone else's highlight. For your own, you can save the Story to your phone before or after adding it to a highlight.

What name fits a big cousin group?

Something like 'Cousin Army' or 'Kids Table' tells the story, and everyone in the family recognises the joke.

What if my sister has a nickname?

Use it. A private nickname in a public highlight name feels personal without saying too much.

Should I post my child's face publicly?

That's a personal choice. Many parents keep children's faces to Close Friends or a private account.

Should I post my boyfriend on Instagram?

Only when you both want it. Talk about it first, because public posts create expectations for both of you.
